Discover the exciting modern fantasy world of "Kingdom" in the new LGBTQ-friendly young adult graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics. With the help of her shapeshifting aunt Sabelle, Shay must search for her mother and safeguard the citizens of the Kingdom while trying to maintain a normal high school life. Join Shay and Sabelle on their heartwarming tale of kindness proving to be more powerful than violence. According to Christof Bogacs, "I felt like I've been working with Marie forever... their work is absolutely undeniable. Every panel explodes with personality." Marie Enger adds, "The whole process was a big 'yes' from start to finish... I hope readers come away from Kingdom realizing the power of kindness. It's naive to try and see the best in people, but to look for others and find a nonviolent solution to a problem - that's the way forward."

TSUBAKI-CHOU LONELY PLANET, VOL.1

Date: 27 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Yeti
Comic Book Yeti is a podcasting site dedicated to comic books and comic book culture. In their latest article, they review the manga series "Tsubakichou Neighborhood" by mangaka Mika Yamamori and published by Yen Press. The story follows a young girl, Fumi, who is forced to work for a reclusive author to pay off her father's debt. Despite the serious premise, the series is a comedic slice-of-life story, with a twist of "Cinderella". Fumi's father returns home to tell her he's drowning in debt and she is evicted from her home. She is then offered a job with the benefit of a free room and board in exchange for housekeeping and care of an elderly writer named Akatsuki Kibikino. Fumi takes the offer and heads to the Tsubakichou neighborhood to meet her new employer. Paying off her father's debt is hard work, but with dedication, it's an open door to find a young man lying on the ground. It turns out he is a great novelist and the kindly elder assumed he was a grumpy strange twentysomething. The two unlikely individuals find a way to work things out and Fumi finds the street even more than she could have ever expected. Yamamori's art style is delightful, with soft shading and line character design taking center stage in every panel. There's a traditional shoujo lean to the illustrations that feel nostalgic and modern. The characters breathe new life into the cozy style we know and love. Fumi's situation is grounded in realism and the cast is written in a manner that is charming and down to earth. The high schoolers feel like high schoolers of various age ranges, which helps make the manga feel appropriately aged.

Grant Morrison’s Judge Dredd, Part II

Date: 26 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Herald
Discover the legendary Judge Dredd story, "Inferno," written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Carlos Ezquerra, the cocreator of Judge Dredd himself, on Comic Book Herald. This prototypical Dredd epic was Morrison's first Judge Dredd story and it was also the biggest. Ezquerra was the perfect artist to bring this story to life, with his unique and textured figures and dynamic compositions. With letterer Tom Frame onboard, the team assembled to create a new vision of Dredd. Morrison's well-reasoned approach to the story set the stage for the tradition of the "Judge Dredd Epic," a sprawling event story with great scope and consequence. Ezquerra's loud style was perfect for the bombastic mayhem and violence, and his unique voice could not be recreated. Judge Dredd fans, don't miss this classic story!

DOOM PATROL... Grant Morrison's laundry list of weird ideas

Date: 26 Feb 2023
Source: Quarantined Comics
Quarantined Comics reviews the long-running comic book series Doom Patrol, which debuted in 1963 and has become a cult classic. Led by a man in a wheelchair, the team of superpowered misfits has found its way into the pop cultural canon, and is now rising in mainstream popularity due to the HBO TV series. This week, Quarantined Comics reviews Grant Morrison's 45-issue run on the series, which began in 1989 and established him as one of the hottest writers of the 80s. Morrison brought his odd sensibility to the page, from British sci-fi series 2000AD to DC superhero stories, including a long run writing Animal Man and the oneshot Batman: Arkham Asylum. Quarantined Comics' Raman and Ryan take on the challenge of reviewing Morrison's run on Doom Patrol, and maybe a little too much of it.

Grant Morrison’s Judge Dredd, Part I

Date: 25 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Herald
Comic Book Herald introduces us to Grant Morrison, a comic book creator who has been active in the industry for four decades. From redefining major flagship characters like X-Men and Batman for the Big Two, to helping pioneer Vertigo's weirdness with The Invisibles and The Filth, to being part of the wave of new creator-owned books at Image in the early 2010s with Nameless and Klaus, Morrison has done it all. They've even done music, with Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance in the music video for "Na Na Na" and as a comic book critic and columnist in the past. Morrison's work in Hollywood as a screenwriter has spanned a decade and continues to this day. However, there is an odd little gap in Morrison's work that nobody has noticed or seen, brushed past: Grant Morrison's Judge Dredd. People seem to go "Oh, that's a movie" and tend to forget that Morrison has often worked on the character, particularly in 2000AD. Morrison's 2000AD superhero work and his Ech work with Zenith co-creator Steve Yeowell is often forgotten, but it's a distant past that still exists in the vague shape we can recall and forget.

Sins of Sinister, Part 2: Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1—in Review!

Date: 24 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Herald
Comic Book Herald reviews "Storm & Brotherhood #1," the exciting start to a three-issue miniseries that forms the core of the "Sinister" event. The overall story isn't a radical departure from the prologue in "Sinister #1," but the double-size format still makes it beautifully told with a surprise twist at the end. Judging from this issue, expect #1 to also establish the year 10 status quo of a Sinister-dominated future, giving us a twisty cliffhanger leading to a ninety-year jump—and skipping the 900-year final issue—going for heady stuff. "Storm's Seven" echo "Ocean's Eleven," with credit to Al Ewing (writes), Paco Medina (draw), Jay David Ramos (color), Ariana Maher (letter design), Tom Muller & Jay Bowen (cover), and Leinil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho (impressively amazingly talented). Paco Medina, the regular artist for Al Ewing's "New Avengers" since 2014, has drawn #1's—so the visuals of year 10 are consistent and unique. Already, the event's structure is highly original, mirroring the timeline format of Hickman's "Power of X" with a funhouse-mirror twist. Radically different yet instantly recognizable, the future timeline is one element of instant recognition for the "Age of Apocalypse" fan. Sugar Man has already seen "Sinister #1," and Storm & Brotherhood start with a scene of destruction of Arakko by Sinister's forces, drawn in Paco Medina's chic and dynamic style rather than Caselli's recall of the atrocity. Five years in a Sinister-dominated future... another five years in the 10-year present of Earth-616, Storm & Brotherhood break the Sinister's hold.

Who Watched the Watchmen? Watchmen and The Darkness Within

Date: 23 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Herald
Comic Book Herald explores the "Great Lie" of the American comic book industry, which is that every new reader is confronted with a superhero-dominated landscape. Alan Moore's Watchmen is the ultimate symbol of this lie, as it debases the innocent icon of youth and brings it to a ruinous darkness. Moore is the "father of darkness" and dread and despair haunt the superhero like a ghost, something that must be "purified" over time. The modern American superhero comic industry is built upon this lie, and Comic Book Herald examines how this lie has been perpetuated and how it affects the industry today.

Legion of X #7-10 in Review—Sins of their Parents!

Date: 22 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Herald
Comic Book Herald reviews the first arc of Legion X-15, written by Si Spurrier with art by Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, Álvaro López, Federico Blee, Java Tartaglia, Ruth Redmond, and color by Clayton Cowles, with a cover by Ben Harvey. This arc has been an enjoyable and surprising reading experience, and the second miniepic of mere four issues (7-10) is an even greater accomplishment, making this title one of the best of the Big 2 in 2022. Spurrier has done a great job of mining the Krakoan material going way back to Power X 2019 and swiftly and thoroughly developing the Warlock/Phalanx thread that Hickman left. The Legion/Father Xavier's fraught non-relationship comes together beautifully and effectively, and with the "Sinister" solicit for May 3's X-Men Fall One-Shot, it looks like the full conclusion of this storyline is coming. With art by Phil Noto, and the fact that it's unclear exactly when Legion X 7-10 will take place, this arc will reveal the post-Hope/Resurrection possession of the psychic Quiet Council in an alt-future dystopia, giving us a great deal of pathos.
