Discover the exciting modern fantasy world of "Kingdom" in the new LGBTQ-friendly young adult graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics. Written by Christof Bogacs and illustrated by Marie Enger, "Black Star Rise" follows high school freshman Shay, who is thrust into a secret world of monsters when her mother suddenly disappears. With the help of her shapeshifting aunt Sabelle, Shay must search for her mother and safeguard the citizens of the Kingdom while trying to maintain a normal high school life. Join Shay and Sabelle on their heartwarming tale of kindness proving to be more powerful than violence. According to Christof Bogacs, "I felt like I've been working with Marie forever... their work is absolutely undeniable. Every panel explodes with personality." Marie Enger adds, "The whole process was a big 'yes' from start to finish... I hope readers come away from Kingdom realizing the power of kindness. It's naive to try and see the best in people, but to look for others and find a nonviolent solution to a problem - that's the way forward."

TSUBAKI-CHOU LONELY PLANET, VOL.1

Date: 27 Feb 2023
Source: Comic Book Yeti
Comic Book Yeti is a podcasting site dedicated to comic books and comic book culture. In their latest article, they review the manga series "Tsubakichou Neighborhood" by mangaka Mika Yamamori and published by Yen Press. The story follows a young girl, Fumi, who is forced to work for a reclusive author to pay off her father's debt. Despite the serious premise, the series is a comedic slice-of-life story, with a twist of "Cinderella". Fumi's father returns home to tell her he's drowning in debt and she is evicted from her home. She is then offered a job with the benefit of a free room and board in exchange for housekeeping and care of an elderly writer named Akatsuki Kibikino. Fumi takes the offer and heads to the Tsubakichou neighborhood to meet her new employer. Paying off her father's debt is hard work, but with dedication, it's an open door to find a young man lying on the ground. It turns out he is a great novelist and the kindly elder assumed he was a grumpy strange twentysomething. The two unlikely individuals find a way to work things out and Fumi finds the street even more than she could have ever expected. Yamamori's art style is delightful, with soft shading and line character design taking center stage in every panel. There's a traditional shoujo lean to the illustrations that feel nostalgic and modern. The characters breathe new life into the cozy style we know and love. Fumi's situation is grounded in realism and the cast is written in a manner that is charming and down to earth. The high schoolers feel like high schoolers of various age ranges, which helps make the manga feel appropriately aged.
